Essential Questions - they resonated for me!

One of my newest clients is a purpose-driven hospital network whose mission is inner-city health. They are huge - about 100,000 employees and they walk-the-talk. They begin every meeting with a reflection that a participant can offer.

For example, at their annual budget meeting the reflections was "to consider how their decisions at the meeting would impact the people they care for, or need to care for in their inner-city communities". A participant at this meeting that I spoke with, who had been in financial services previously, said the dialogue around the reflection reflection had a huge impact on the tone of what they had known as contentious discussions in their prior life.

So, this week we were discussing how they interview prospective employees to ensure alignment with their values and mission. I asked them about how they begin to get this information in a hiring world that is usually driven by what you did, where you worked, did I say blah, blah, blah?

Off the top of their head they shared the following questions:

Identity -
1. What is your purpose in life (Why are you here)?
2. What do you intend to do (Your mission)?
3. The way you do it (Your values)?

Vocational Question -
1. How should live, knowing I will die?
2. What is my gift to the family of the earth?
3. Will I be a good ancestor?

I found them thought provoking and felt you might enjoy them. Question # 3 under vocational questions is especially relevant to MyFamily - "Will I be a good ancestor?" I have a lot of thinking to do. Till later - John
